A Secluded Cluster of Neolithic Tombs
Attention history buffs and archaeological enthusiasts; we’ve got something for you in Sligo. Did you know that Ireland’s west is home to the oldest and most significant concentration of Neolithic Tombs? The Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is a site of immense historical significance, so much so that it’s earned a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tentative List.
Settled along the Cúil Íorra Peninsula, this ancient location is home to more than 30 ancient tombs, with a few dating back almost six thousand years. The impressive megalithic chambers made from massive boulders are a must-see, as is the newly renovated cottage, which offers a deeper insight into the background of the ruins.
Visitors are free to explore the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery however they like, either self-guided or with a tour group. Inside the visitor center, there’s an option to take a printed map with a route, so you won’t miss anything important. Plus, the grounds have some handy facilities like toilets and a car park. Although the cemetery is currently closed, it’s due to reopen in June 2025.
