A Majestic Peak Steeped in History

Out on the Cúil Irra Peninsula, just west of Sligo town, Knocknarea Mountain towers over the county at 327 meters high. But it’s not just the views that pull people in; Ireland’s largest unopened cairn sits at the summit, which is believed to be the tomb of Queen Maeve, who was the wife of King Olliol of Connaught.

The trek up Knocknarea sets off from the Knocknarea Hill Walk car park and takes about 90 minutes out and back. It’s a moderately challenging walk with a couple of steep sections that may give the legs a little burn, but there are benches along the way if you need a quick breather. Bring a hat and gloves, even if the weather looks good, as it can get windy at the top.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll be met by Queen Maeve’s Grave and six smaller tombs scattered nearby. Please respect the signs and avoid climbing; these ancient sites have stood the test of time; let’s help keep it that way. Try to plan your visit for sunrise or sunset. On a clear day, the Golden Hour views are nothing short of magical. Just don’t hang around too long after the sun goes down, or you might have a sketchy trip back down in the dark.
